28,461 DWT Bulk Carrier Runs Aground in Marmara Sea with 27,500 Tons of Rice Onboard
A small handysize dry bulk vessel carrying 27,500 tons of rice ran aground in the Ceyport waters off the Tekirdağ coast in Turkey’s Marmara Sea on the afternoon of July 13, local time, according to maritime news provider Xinde Marine News.
The stricken vessel has been identified as the REGALO (IMO: 9260304). Built in January 2002, the bulk carrier has a deadweight tonnage of 28,461 DWT, a gross tonnage of 16,978, a length of 169.3 meters and a beam of 27.2 meters, with a design draft of 9.8 meters. It is currently operated by Amson Marine Ltd.

Maritime data from Vessel Value Visualization shows that the vessel deviated from its scheduled navigation route while performing berthing operations. The unintended course change led the ship into shallow waters, where it touched the seabed and became stranded.
Turkish Coast Guard launched an immediate emergency response after the grounding incident. Law enforcement officers and professional emergency teams were dispatched to the accident site. To secure emergency operation space and guarantee regional navigation safety, a temporary maritime traffic control was implemented in the surrounding waters, prohibiting all unauthorized vessels from approaching the grounded ship.
Subsequently, professional diving teams conducted comprehensive underwater inspections of the REGALO, thoroughly examining the vessel’s structural integrity and assessing potential fuel leakage risks. The on-site investigation confirmed no pollutant leakage resulting from the accident, and the local marine environment remains unaffected.
At present, the shipowner has applied for tugboat assistance. Refloating operations will be carried out when hydrological and meteorological conditions become favorable. Meanwhile, the local Turkish maritime authority has launched an official investigation to identify the exact cause of the grounding incident.
