IMO Working Group Focuses on Methanol/Ethanol Fuel Safety Rules
The International Maritime Organization’s third meeting of the Intersessional Working Group on Development of Technical Provisions for Safety of Ships using Alternative Fuels (ISWG-AF 3) is being held at IMO Headquarters in London from 7 to 11 September 2026.
The five-day meeting is focused primarily on revising the Interim Guidelines for the Safety of Ships Using Methyl/Ethyl Alcohol as Fuel (MSC.1/Circ.1621), with the work aimed at bringing the revised guidelines closer to finalization ahead of the 12th session of IMO’s Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC 12).
The revision is expected to provide the basis for the future development of mandatory IMO safety requirements for ships using methanol and ethanol as fuel.
The working group will also continue work on safety provisions for low-flashpoint oil fuels and fuel cell power installations.
