China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) subsidiary Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding has secured orders for 13 containerships in a single day, strengthening its position in the increasingly competitive mid-sized container vessel segment.

On 18 June, Huangpu Wenchong, together with China Shipbuilding Trading Co. (CSTC), signed contracts with three domestic and international shipowners for a total of 13 containerships above 5,000 TEU.

The package includes:

3 × 5,300-TEU containerships

4 × 6,200-TEU containerships

6 × 6,400-TEU containerships

The latest deals come as liner operators continue fleet renewal programs and seek more fuel-efficient tonnage amid tightening environmental regulations.

The 5,300-TEU vessels are based on Huangpu Wenchong's self-developed "Honghu" series, featuring an overall length of 235 metres and deadweight of about 71,500 tonnes. The design incorporates optimized hull forms, high-efficiency propeller-rudder systems and energy-saving devices to maximize cargo intake and fuel economy.

The 6,200-TEU design was developed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI), while the 6,400-TEU vessels were designed by MARIC's 708 Research Institute. Both types comply with IMO EEDI Phase III requirements and have been optimized for low fuel consumption and reduced emissions.

According to Huangpu Wenchong, the ships have been tailored to different operational profiles, with enhanced reefer capacity, cargo intake and port adaptability to improve operating efficiency for owners.

With these latest contracts, Huangpu Wenchong's cumulative orderbook for containerships above 5,000 TEU has reached 39 vessels, giving the Chinese yard an increasingly strong presence in the global mid-sized containership market.

The company said it will continue to build on its standardized construction system and digital quality-control capabilities, while further developing its "Honghu" series and expanding cooperation with global shipping partners as the industry accelerates toward greener operations.

As demand shifts from ultra-large ships to flexible, fuel-efficient vessels, the battle for the mid-sized containership market is intensifying — and Huangpu Wenchong has just added another 13 reasons why it intends to remain a major player.
