
On May 9, 2025, the long-anticipated Maforki Port in Sierra Leone celebrated its grand opening — a milestone achievement symbolizing deepening China-Africa cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. Built in just 7 months, this port not only showcases engineering efficiency but marks a new gateway for West Africa’s mineral exports.
Backed by Chinese firms including CTC Port Logistics, Aluminum Corporation of China (CHALCO), and COSCO Shipping, the port’s first phase has an annual bauxite handling capacity of 8 million tonnes, with plans to double it by 2026.
Strategic Response from COSCO Shipping Bulk:
In line with Maforki Port’s operations, COSCO Shipping Bulk is reportedly preparing a large-scale fleet expansion. The company has ordered two 209,800 dwt ammonia- and methanol-ready newcastlemaxes from Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding, with options for 10 more vessels. Delivery is scheduled for 2027. Industry sources suggest COSCO may build up to 30 new vessels, ensuring seamless bulk logistics support for the port's growing capacity.
This synergy between port development and fleet expansion underscores China’s commitment to building efficient, sustainable trade corridors across Africa.
