On December 22, 2024, Shanghai Port celebrated a historic moment by successfully handling its 50 millionth TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) at the Yangshan Phase IV Automated Terminal. This makes Shanghai Port the first port in the world to achieve an annual container throughput of 50 million TEUs, solidifying its leadership in international maritime logistics and marking a significant milestone for the Shanghai International Shipping Center.
The Yangshan Phase IV Terminal, a global leader in automation since 2017, has already handled over 35 million TEUs. Automated technology at Shanghai Port has reduced workforce requirements by 70% and improved operational efficiency by over 30%.
In 2024, the Luojing Container Terminal Phase I commenced operations, using cutting-edge domestic automation systems like NEO-TOS, which serve as replicable solutions for smart port upgrades worldwide. The proprietary ITOS system, developed by Shanghai Port, is now used internationally, including at Peru’s Chancay Port, showcasing China's technological prowess in global shipping.
Through new business models like international transshipment, coastal relay, and cross-border e-commerce, Shanghai Port continues to expand. In 2024, international transshipment volumes increased by over 20%, exceeding 7 million TEUs. Sea-rail intermodal transport extended its reach to 9 provinces and 44 cities, achieving a 40% year-on-year growth in container throughput.
Shanghai Port is a pioneer in green port development, achieving breakthroughs in energy efficiency and clean energy adoption. Yangshan Port is China’s first high-rated "Green Port" with widespread shore power infrastructure.
In 2023, over 125 LNG fueling operations were conducted, totaling 730,000 cubic meters. Future plans aim to boost LNG and green methanol refueling capacities to 1 million cubic meters and 1 million tons, respectively.
With nearly 350 international routes connecting 200+ countries and 700+ ports, Shanghai Port has maintained its status as the world's most connected port for 13 consecutive years. Its robust network empowers Chinese enterprises to expand globally and ensures resilience across supply chains.
