SPG seeks transformation into world-class sea port operator

Shandong Port Group, the world's largest port conglomerate in terms of cargo capacity, has made steady progress in building itself into a world-class sea port operator in the past year.

The port conglomerate's cargo handling capacity has reached more than 1.6 billion metric tons, and container handling capacity exceeds 37 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), ranking first and third, respectively, in the world.

Qingdao Port took the lead among the port group's units. Its container handling capacity ranked fifth in the world, and the efficiency of its terminals remains first worldwide. Official data shows that in 2022, Qingdao Port achieved a cargo throughput of 658 million tons, growing by 4.3 percent year-on-year, and the container handling capability of the port increased by 8.3 percent year-on-year to 25.67 million TEUs, both of which ranked fourth in the country.

According to official statistics, Qingdao Port, Rizhao Port and Yantai Port, all of which are SPG's subsidiaries, were listed among the country's top 10 in terms of cargo handling capacity in 2022. Cargo throughput for foreign trade at Qingdao and Rizhao ports ranked second and fourth in the country, respectively, and Yantai Port made the country's top 10 list.

In the past year, Qingdao Port has taken advantage of the integrated development of SPG, and promoted the high-quality operation of land and sea ports. Qingdao Port opened a total of 28 new shipping routes, developed five sea-rail combined transport routes, and set up five inland ports in 2022. Official data indicates that the combined sea-rail transport volume of Qingdao Port totaled 1.9 million TEUs last year, ranking first in the country for eight years in a row.

This year, the Shandong government plans to support SPG, and help build it into a world-class port cluster on the Shandong Peninsula. The construction of the third phase of the Qingdao Qianwan Container Terminal is also expected to be accelerated, with more overseas shipping routes scheduled to be launched.
