Qingdao Port breaks world record for 7 years in a row

The Qingdao Qianwan Container terminal (QQCT), a unit of Qingdao Port, recently set a new global vessel productivity record of 422.38 moves per hour while handling Maersk's Latin America service vessel MAERSK SALINA. This was the second time QQCT broke the global shipping route record since the beginning of 2022.

Consistently breaking global service records isn't new for Qingdao Port. According to port officials, by the end of 2022, Qingdao Port had remained in first place in vessel productivity among global container ports of call where Maersk vessels berth for seven consecutive years. In the process of smashing global records, Qingdao Port has formed a standard service mode.

To organize production resources in a more reasonable and efficient way in daily port operations, berth planners may allocate workers and cargo-handling equipment deployed for vessels in advance. This can make the organization of port production more forward-looking and guarantee the achievement of target plans.

Data show that QQCT's single-crane efficiency increased by 4.5 percent year-on-year in 2022. Its berth productivity for 8,000-TEU container ships witnessed a year-on-year increase of 1.8 percent and its planned vessel achievement rate increased by 3 percent. Last year, the terminal broke a total of 17 production records in new shipping routes, single-ship handling, single-work shifts and single work-days.

As shorter time means higher productivity, vessel-at-berth time and non-working waiting time are two critical factors for container terminals and ocean carriers. To significantly shorten the length of time ships spend at berth, QQCT has continuously optimized its cargo-stowage plans. According to data provided by the terminal's planning room, in 2022 non-working waiting time for vessels at QQCT declined by 50 percent and overall berth waiting time decreased by at least 50 percent.
