South China's Yangpu Port registers first foreign-funded int'l vessel

Yangpu Port in south China's Hainan Province recently registered its first foreign-funded international ship - the Ma Yue of Xinlat Shipping, with the port seeing increased appeal in the international market under China's plan on the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port.

The Ma Yue is an oil products tanker, with a cargo load of 5,036 tons owned by Xinlat Shipping. Its previous owner, a Singaporean company, saw bright prospects in Yangpu Port after the Master Plan, which sought to make Hainan more open and convenient for trade and investment, was released in 2020.

Xinlat Shipping submitted the registration transfer of Ma Yue in Yangpu Port on March 2. The Ma Yue completed its crew change on Sunday and finished import customs clearing processes in Yangpu Port.

Two of its Thai crew members have been granted certificates of competency by maritime authorities, making them the first foreign crew members servicing on a ship registered in the port.

"In earlier communications, we fully introduced the China Yangpu Port registry system and future development plan to Xinlat Shipping. At the same time, after on-site surveys and visits to customs, maritime affairs and other departments, and learning thoroughly about of Yangpu Port's business environment, the company is more determined to invest in the shipping industry in Yangpu," said Chen Guoxing, director of Yangpu Economic Development Zone's Shipping Industry Project Office.

A total of 412 shipping industry-related market players have registered and settled in Yangpu between June 2020 and February this year, with 204 registered ships combining 8.97 million tons of cargo tonnage.

With the addition of the Ma Yue, Yangpu Port has 33 international ships registered under it, with a total cargo tonnage of 5.17 million tons, putting Hainan in second place in the country for the number of international ships registered.
