Qingdao automated port terminal sets seventh world record

The fully automated container terminal at Qingdao Port – owned and operated by Shandong Port Group, or SPG, based in Qingdao city in East China's Shandong province – on Aug 24 set a world efficiency record for the seventh time.

The terminal broke the record for freight handling operations, with the Panama-flagged container ship MSC Martina, with its average efficiency reaching 52.1 moves per hour of TEUs – twenty-foot equivalent units, the standard container size – for a single crane.

That performance smashed the previous record of 47.6 moves of TEUs per hour set by the team there on Dec 17.

Since the start of this year, Shandong Port Group – one of the biggest port operators in the world – has reportedly stepped up its efforts to build an internationally advanced smart and green port. It has consistently introduced new technologies and applications, as well as streamlined operations processes, to steadily improve the terminal's on-site handling efficiency.

Moreover, it has expanded applications scenarios for port automation, completing construction of the world's first air-track intelligent transport system (demonstration section) on June 29.

In this context, the terminal is said to have achieved revolutionary breakthroughs in the transition of transportation networks from two-dimensional to three-dimensional platforms, offering a new solution for the construction of intelligent and green ports.
