The decline in box volumes at the Port of Hong Kong has eased during May, despite COVID-19 continuing to ravage large swathes of the planet.
After throughput fell by 15.9% in January, partially due to an early lunar new year and the first effects of the coronavirus, the decline has continued but more gently. In May box volumes fell 3.5% following a reduction in April of 7.3%.
In terms of numbers, the port handled 1.516m teu during May compared to 1.572m teu a year ago. Drilling down the terminals at Kwai Tsing processed 1.211m teu equating to a fall of 1.8%. The midstream operators fared less well, handling 305,000 teu, some 9.8% less than in May last year.
The cumulative throughput for the first five months of 2020, now stands at 7.075m teu, down 6.5% for the period compared to 2019.
