Port business in east China recovers

Port and related logistics businesses in east China's Jiangsu Province is surging back to normal now that the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is under control in the country.

Despite the fact that the epidemic forced much of China into lockdown and slowed the economy, Jiangsu, a major port province in China, saw a cargo throughput of 610 million tons in the first quarter of 2020, a decrease of only 2.8 percent from the previous year.

The province was able to maintain a pretty strong operation of its waterways and ports in the first quarter partly thanks to an average of 150,000 tons of goods sent on a daily basis to Hubei Province, the most hit province by the epidemic.

With the epidemic now under control in the country, the province is seeing its port operation and logistics businesses surging back to normal operation. In March, container freight volume handled in all of its ports saw a significant rise of 51 percent from the previous month, matching the same level from last year.

The data in April is estimated to be even better.

"We are focused on taking full advantage of Jiangsu in water transportation, promoting the joint operation between river transportation and sea transportation, and further improve the transportation organization ability to standardize all ports in the province and provide customized and accurate service," said Lu Yongquan, head of Jiangsu Provincial Department of Transport.
