The world's largest cargo ship in the world's largest port

The world’s largest cargo ship, the MSC Gulsun, sailed into Yangshan Deep-Water Port, the world’s largest automated container port, early Saturday.

Built by South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries for the Mediterranean Shipping Co, the vessel started Asia-Europe service on July 4. The ship is about 400 meters long, 61.5 meters wide and 33.2 meters high. It has a maximum capacity of 224,987 tons, or 23,756 twenty-foot equivalent units.

MSC Gulsun faced a bit of a traffic jam as it approached the port, after boats sheltering from the impact of subtropical storm Danas on the seas around Hangzhou Bay south of Shanghai set sail again. Its successful docking was coordinated by Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration.

The ship unloaded some 2,000 twenty-foot equivalent units of cargo at the port before departing for its next stop in Shenzhen in Guangdong Province.

Before the ship left, officers from the administration did an inspection to ensure all conditions of the ship were met to sail on the high seas.

The Panamanian-flagged MSC Gulsun is equipped with smart technology that analyzes navigation data to determine the most appropriate sea routes, according to cost and safety measures.
