East China port hosts Asia's largest tonnage cruise ship

World Dream, Asia's largest tonnage cruise ship, berthed in east China's port of Xiamen Monday, making it the first 150,000-ton mega cruise ship to make port after the port had an upgrade.

The World Dream is 330 meters in length and 40 meters wide, with a great number of entertainment facilities installed including water slides, a sports field, bars and a cinema. Sailing from Hong Kong, it was the mega ship's first time stopping in Xiamen, bringing visitors from various Asian countries and regions to the eastern Chinese city.

"I'm traveling with the cruise through recommendation from friends. There're all sorts of fun onboard to make you relax," said a tourist from South Korea.

Xiamen began renovating its port in 2017 to better serve China's Belt and Road Initiative as a waterway hub. The renovation made the waterway leading to the port wider and deeper, and improved its cruise ship berths to accommodate larger ships.

"Before the waterway was rebuilt, some ships had to wait for the tide to enter the port. It might take six hours for them, especially large ships, to wait for the tide. This situation has greatly improved after the port upgrade. Large cruise ships like this one of 150,000 tons, or even 200,000-ton ones, can get in and out any time," said the director of vessel traffic management at Xiamen's Maritime Safety Administration, Chen Lufeng.

Xiamen's maritime authorities have also optimized the approval procedures for ships' entry and departure in recent years. The approval process was shortened from seven days to one day, and the entry inspection which used to take two to three hours now takes about 30 minutes only.
