HONG KONG's Hutchison Ports HIT held a ceremony to mark the opening its remote-controlled rubber-tyre gantry cranes (RTGCs) and automated container stacking system at Container Terminal 9 (CT9) North.
This makes CT9 North the first container terminal in Hong Kong where all yard cranes are operated remotely and the stacking of containers is fully automated at yard, said the Hutchison statement.
The completion of the project is also unprecedented as it was the first time in the world for a container terminal to make such transit while maintaining full operations.
HIT managing director Gerry Yim, pointed out that the remote crane operations can bring operational efficiency and productivity and a reduction in carbon emissions.
Hong Kong deputy Transport and Housing Secretary Angela Lee said such remote operating systems strengthened competitiveness of Hong Kong.
