China's shipbuilding industry maintains world-leading level across indicators

Three major indicators for China's shipbuilding industry ranked the country first in the world, according to the latest data that measured the amount of shipbuilding completed, the amount of new orders received and the amount of orders held.

At Hudong Zhonghua Group, a shipbuilder in Shanghai, a batch of newly undertaken liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers officially started construction earlier this month. The shipyard received orders for two carriers at a time, which brought the total orders of LNG carriers held by the company to 50.

"The equipment and materials of our LNG carriers and the construction process of the entire ship are now at a world-leading level," said Chen Jun, general manager of Hudong Zhonghua.

From January to July 2023, shipbuilding factories across China completed more than 24 million deadweight tonnage, a year-on-year increase of 15.6 percent. New orders received exceeded 44 million deadweight tonnage, a year-on-year increase of 74 percent. The total hand-held orders reached nearly 128 million deadweight tonnage, a year-on-year increase of 23.4 percent.

All the three major indicators ranked first in the world. Meanwhile, the added value of the orders received is continuously growing.

"The types of ships ordered this year feature increasingly high-tech and high added value. The main types of ships include LNG carriers, 300,000-ton oil tankers, and other types of bulk carriers," said Li Lin, assistant to the director of the marketing department of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation, Dalian branch.

Thanks to the rapid growth of China's economy and trade, the fleet size of Chinese shipowners has developed rapidly. As of now, the size of the fleet held by Chinese shipowners ranks first in the world in terms of gross tonnage.

"Becoming the world's largest ship-owning country has greatly enhanced our confidence in developing the shipping industry. The increase in the size of the fleet has led to a larger shipping force, shipping resources, and shipping talents, which has also enhanced the capability of the shipping industry to contribute to the country’s economic development," said Zhang Shouguo, executive vice president of the China Shipowners Association.

This year, China State Shipbuilding Group completed and delivered ships accounting for 18.6 percent of the world, ranking first among shipbuilding companies around the globe.

A number of high-end ship types were successfully delivered by the Chinese shipbuilder, including the world's largest ultra-large container ship, LNG carriers, and the world's first M350 offshore floating storage and offloading ship.
