China topped the global shipbuilding rankings in terms of three major indicators - global output, new orders and existing orders, in the first half of 2023, according to data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on Wednesday.
MIIT data showed that from January to June, China’s shipyards produced ships of 21.13 million deadweight tonnes (DWT), a year-on-year increase of 14.2 percent. Besides, it received new orders for vessels totaling 37.67 million DWT, 67.7 percent higher than in the same period in 2022, while holding 123.77 million DWT of ships in existing orders, up 20.5 percent.
"In the first half of this year, China is the only country that has achieved growth in terms of the three major indicators, which proves that China's shipbuilding industry has gathered a healthy momentum of development. We have made gains in different ship types, such as bulk carriers, container ships, oil tankers and roll-on/roll-off vessels," said Li Yanqing, the Secretary-General of China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI).
Notably, China's new shipbuilding orders accounted for 72.6 percent of the global market, indicating China's growing prowess in the global shipbuilding market.
"Data for H1 has partly reflected our all-round acceleration in the sector. We have gained unprecedented achievements in terms of profits and main businesses while blowing a clarion call for holistic advancement in China's shipbuilding industry," Li said.
Another noteworthy indicator is compensated gross tonnage (CGT), which reflects the workload needed to produce a ship and is calculated by multiplying the tonnage of a vessel by a coefficient, which is determined according to its type and size.
In the first six months of this year, the CGT of China’s new shipbuilding orders accounted for 67.2 percent of the world's total, which means the value of Chinese-made ships is getting higher and higher. In his opinion, the valuation of the data is far surpassing that of the previous years.
"We have ramped up efforts to study (new shipbuilding) technologies, and meanwhile to improve (existing) techniques. Another very important thing for enterprises is profitability. When we are building ships, we have to keep increasing efficiency and make money from every order," he said.
