China's largest LNG storage base starts operation

China's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage base went into operation on Monday in east China's Jiangsu Province as the first shipment of LNG was unloaded at the Yancheng Green Energy Port of China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).

After a 16-day voyage of 6,000 nautical miles, the carrier with 210,000 cubic meters of LNG began unloading at the Green Energy Port on Monday afternoon. The shipment, which can satisfy basic gas needs of 6.5 million households for one month, will be stored in the first LNG storage tank of 220,000 cubic meters in the country.

"This mission involved a self-developed loading arm, by far the largest nationwide, and a self-developed control system. The unloading ran smoothly, which verified the reliability of the whole set of equipment," said Yang Yong, deputy general manager of CNOOC Gas and Power Group Ltd.

Located in the Binhai Port Industrial Park in Yancheng City, the first-phase base boasts a total gas storage capacity of 2.5 million cubic meters, with six LNG storage tanks each having a capacity for 270,000 cubic meters and the remaining four holding 220,000 cubic meters each.

The storage base, scheduled to be put into full operation in 2023, will be able to handle around 6 million tons of LNG annually, equal to about 8.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas. It has the capacity to meet the residential demand of Jiangsu Province, which has a population of around 85 million, for 28 months.

The base will help cut about 28.5 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year, which is equivalent to planting 60 million trees.

"In addition to the Yancheng Green Energy Port, efforts are underway to expand the capacity of several receiving terminals in Ningbo (a city in Zhejiang Province) and Zhuhai (a city in Guangdong Province) as we are building 11 storage tanks, each with a 270,000-cubic-meter capacity. By completion, the storage capacity of these terminals will be doubled to provide better service for domestic natural gas supply," said Yang.

By the end of 2021, China had completed 22 coastal LNG receiving terminals with a total receiving capacity of 92.3 million tons, ranking first in the world in terms of construction scale.
