Offshore Wind Project Moray West to Streamline Wind Farm Construction with StormGeo's Metocean Forecasting

Moray Offshore Windfarm (West) Ltd. has selected StormGeo for metocean forecasting for offshore wind farm construction at the Moray West Project.

The Moray West project is an 882 MW offshore wind project under development by Ocean Winds in Scotland's Moray Firth. Ocean Winds is an international company dedicated to offshore wind energy, created as a 50:50 joint venture in 2020 by EDP Renewables and ENGIE. Consisting of 60 wind turbines, the wind farm will power up to the equivalent of 640,000 homes and avert 1.1 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from ending up in the atmosphere.

Moray West aims to generate the first power in 2024, be fully operational in 2025, and supply clean green energy to the UK national grid for over 25 years.

StormGeo will provide metocean forecasting for the Moray West project during its construction phase. StormGeo's forecasting services will give advanced and continuous decision support, helping to identify optimal weather windows for safe and cost-efficient development work at the offshore site.

"Working closely with StormGeo on the Moray West project is critical to our understanding of how the weather will impact the construction work on-site. Their reliable forecasts and expert decision support help us determine and exploit the best weather windows for on-site construction, ultimately keeping our crews safe and our operational costs down. We are excited to deepen our partnership with StormGeo,” says Magnus Currie, Construction Services Manager at Moray West.

The new contract marks a continuation of Ocean Wind's collaboration with StormGeo. Moray East, the sister project of Moray West, relies on StormGeo's metocean forecasting services – a project StormGeo has supported since construction began in 2019. Additionally, StormGeo supports Ocean Winds at the WindFloat Atlantic project, a three-turbine floating prototype off the coast of Portugal.

“We are happy to see that our clients place continued trust in StormGeo's services and look forward to deepening our collaboration with Ocean Winds. Ocean Winds is a visionary company with a global and diverse pipeline, successfully tapping into a booming Scottish offshore wind industry. StormGeo is excited to continue being a part of this journey,” says Carsten Torbergsen, Senior VP Ocean at StormGeo.

The forecasting services will be supplied to the Moray West project from StormGeo's local forecasting office in Aberdeen, Scotland, for two years, beginning in the spring of 2023.
