Chinese marine engineering giant gets new project in Port of Colombo

China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) said on its WeChat public account on Tuesday that it has won a bid to build the east terminal at Colombo Port, which aims to boost throughput and the port's role as a transshipment hub in South Asia.

The new terminal is scheduled to be completed within 36 months. It will contain a 720-meter-long wharf and storage of 600,000 square meters.

CHEC's regional company in Sri Lanka hailed the deal as another large marine engineering project, along with Hambantota Port Development Project, Colombo South Container Terminal Project and the Jaya Container Terminal at the Port of Colombo.

The new wharf project consolidates the company's advantages in the marine engineering business and also offers a solid foundation for follow-up projects.

CHEC is a Chinese infrastructure giant and the builder of a number of world-class projects including the Yangshan Deep Water Port in Shanghai and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.
