China has big potential to develop offshore wind energy

China's offshore wind energy has big potential to be developed, which indicates high likelihood for the country to gradually wean off heavy reliance on fossil fuel energy in the future, sources said recently.

China has roughly a 20% share of global offshore wind power. It is predicted that China's offshore wind turbines generating capacity in 2030 will reach 100 GW, compared with 250 GW globally. Besides, the country has the highest wind power utilization potential if calculated by its number of working wind turbines, data showed.

Many Chinese big energy firms and foreign joint ventures are devoted to developing offshore wind energy projects in the country in recent years.

In earlier days this year, Dongfang Electric (DEC) took the wraps off China's first 10 MW turbine and sector leader Goldwind unveiled its own long-awaited 8 MW model on a landmark day for Chinese offshore wind.

Meanwhile, China Three Gorges (CTG) will build a pioneering combined offshore wind and fish farming development in China's Bohai Bay with total installed capacity of 300 MW, sources said.
