China successfully installs pre-assembled wind turbine at sea

China successful installed a pre-assembled wind turbine onto a fixed foundation in an offshore wind farm off the coast of east China's Jiangsu Province on Saturday.

Before the installation, the tower and the turbine were completely assembled onshore, and then tugged to the wind farm that is 42 kilometers offshore from Dongtai, a city of Jiangsu.

The entire installation took just about two hours.

"The most difficult part of installing pre-assembled wind turbine lies in how to anchor its soft landing system to the fixed foundation, how to locate and how to cushion the force," said Dong Jie, general manager of the project department of New Energy Engineering Co., Ltd. of CCCC Third Harbor Engineering Co., Ltd. (Shanghai).

The wind farm has 75 four-megawatt wind turbines. Each wind turbine weigh nearly 1,000 tons, with its tower measuring 76 meters. The wind blade is 65 meters long.

The traditional way of wind turbine installation is that all parts of the wind turbine were assembled offshore. Comparing with it, the new way of installation can reduce working period offshore by two to three days.

"Comparing with the traditional offshore installation, our method is more efficient and can shorten the construction period of the offshore wind farm. It can widely used in wind farms with different water levels and geological conditions. It also can reduce the offshore working period," said Pei Zewei, an engineer from Dongtai Offshore Wind Power Co., Ltd., a subsidy of China Energy Investment Corporation (CHN Energy).

To enable the installation, the company worked with universities and institutions, and developed technologies in the whole-turbine transportation, cushion, and location.

"Through this innovation, our project laid a foundation for China to build wind projects in deeper water," said Li Dajun, chairman of Dongtai Offshore Wind Power Co., Ltd.

The construction of the wind farm started last year.

Capable of producing 300 megawatt of power, the wind farm will be connected to the state grid by the end of this year.
