Natural gas will be the fastest growing energy of China in next 30 years, along with supply-side reforms and changing road economic improvement, predicted an industry report.
The demand for natural gas in China could surge exponentially to nearly 520 billion cubic meters by 2030 and further exceed 800 billion cubic meters by 2050, showed a report by Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) in the 7th global energy security think tank forum held in Beijing recently.
By 2050, coal will take less than 40% of the energy mix in China; whereas the share of natural gas is expected to rise above 20%, said the report.
Besides, natural gas will also play a leading role in power generation. It is estimated that by 2020 electricity generated by natural gas will reach around 335.1 TWh; and it will hit about 582.2 TWh by 2030 and exceed 1,000 TWh by 2050.
Meanwhile, natural gas can be used for heat supply as well, partly filling the supply gap from coal.
Nevertheless, surging demand for natural gas also poses a serious problem for energy security. Considering its unique characteristics in production, sales and transportation, natural gas industry calls for large-scale infrastructures to ensure safety, said Liu Qiang, secretary general of the forum.
"Natural gas exploitation and supply will become the key issue for China's energy security in the future", Liu added.
