COSCO SHIPPING: Contributing "the Strength of China's Shipping Industry" to the Sustainable Development of World Transportation

Maritime transportation constitutes an important part of international trade and is the least energy-intensive mode of cargo transportation. It accounts for about three-quarters of the total global freight transport activities, but its energy consumption accounts for only 8% of the energy use in the transportation industry, and its carbon emissions account for only 3% of the world's total.

As the world's largest integrated shipping enterprise, COSCO SHIPPING has been actively fulfilling its social responsibility, supporting and leading the industry to steadily evolve towards green and low-carbon practice, and contributing “the strength of the shipping industry” to protecting the environment and realizing the community with a shared future for mankind.

Intensive efforts have been made to push forward the installation and use of shore power equipment in the shipping system. Up to now, the coverage rate of shore power berths among the seven terminals under the control of COSCO SHIPPING has exceeded 80%. The accumulated power consumption of ships and on-shore enterprises has surpassed 30 million kWH, reducing carbon emissions by more than 30,000 tons.

COSCO SHIPPING has taken the lead in establishing the shipping blockchain consortium - GSBN, which succeeded in cutting the processing time of import documents from several days to just a few hours through “paperless cargo release”, as a part of its effort to promote the green development of supply chain and transportation mode by using digital technology.

With Xiamen Ocean Gate Container Terminal as a vehicle, COSCO SHIPPING has also initiated the first unmanned automated green terminal in China to accelerate the application of 5G IoT system and build an environmentally-friendly and efficient port consolidation and distribution system.

Lead industry operation optimization and enable an unimpeded logistics system chain

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the tightening of the global logistics supply chain, COSCO SHIPPING has given full play to its advantages in industry chain integration, strengthened digital operation and end-to-end service capacity building, connected key supply chain links such as ports, shipping, customs clearance and warehousing, and promoted “rail-road-water” intermodal transportation to open up blockages in the logistics system and reduce costs at key nodes.

Based on this service, COSCO SHIPPING has launched New Western Land-Sea Corridor Express Service, China-Europe Land-Sea Express Service, China-US Container Express and other logistics corridor products to address the urgent needs of cargo owners and make positive contributions to unimpeded transportation for global trade.

Explore energy transformation in the shipping industry and draft a “net zero emission” blueprint

COSCO SHIPPING has responded to the call of domestic and international stakeholders to address the challenges of climate change, studied and formulated the action plan of “peaking carbon emission and achieving carbon neutrality”, actively fulfilled the social responsibility of a shipping enterprise by exploring the transformation of energy consumption structure of ships, and clarified the key measures to lead the green development of the industry.

At the same time, COSCO SHIPPING has constantly strengthened the pilot work by establishing and promoting the Yangtze River 700 TEU pure green electric ship project. It has integrated key enterprises in the industry to collaborate in the relevant research and development, striving to launch sustainable and promotable zero carbon emission ships in the near future.

Sustainable transportation and green development are of great merit and benefit for future generations

COSCO SHIPPING will work together with its peers in the global port and shipping industry chain to implement the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, build green shipping, construct a new ecosystem of supply chain services and make due contributions of the maritime transportation industry to sustainable development.
