China Launches First Nationwide Methanol Bunkering Vessel

 
As a pioneer in the green shipping transition, COSCO SHIPPING continues to strategically develop its comprehensive clean-fuel supply chain. Against this backdrop, the 8,500 DWT duplex stainless steel chemical tanker, "CHIMBUSCO GREEN ENERGY 85"—operated by its subsidiary, CHIMBUSCO—was successfully launched on January 23, 2026. As China's first methanol bunkering vessel capable of operating across all Chinese sea waters, it provides critical infrastructure for upgrading domestic methanol bunkering services and marks a significant milestone in the execution of COSCO SHIPPING’s green strategy.

As the driving force behind the group’s green transition, CHIMBUSCO has established a diverse clean-fuel supply matrix. Having already secured a dominant domestic position in biofuels, the company now holds green methanol bunkering licenses for the Ports of Shanghai and Ningbo, taking the lead in providing mature, end-to-end bunkering solutions.

The launching ceremony took place before an audience of industry partners and guests. At the auspicious time of 11:28 AM, the vessel made its inaugural entry into the water. This event signifies that China’s methanol bunkering network has reached a substantive, nationwide operational stage. Leveraging its nationwide operational advantage, "CHIMBUSCO GREEN ENERGY 85" is designed to bridge inter-provincial gaps in ship-to-ship (STS) methanol bunkering and build a nationwide service capacity. By connecting northern and southern shipping hubs and enhancing cross-regional synergy, the vessel ensures full-voyage bunkering for methanol dual-fuel ships. This breakthrough not only validates CHIMBUSCO’s sophisticated service capabilities but also bolsters COSCO SHIPPING’s green fleet. Ultimately, it positions China’s maritime industry at the forefront of the global zero-carbon transition, offering a "China Solution" and contributing "China Strength" to the world’s decarbonization goals.
