COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation Co., Ltd. has approved the construction of a new 9,200 DWT stainless steel chemical tanker at Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. The vessel will be built for its wholly owned subsidiary, Shanghai COSCO Shipping Chemical Transportation Co., with a total investment of approx. RMB 191 million (incl. tax), partially financed by internal capital and external funding.

The move aims to optimize the company’s chemical tanker fleet structure and enhance profitability. As of January 2025, the subsidiary operates 9 vessels totaling 83,000 DWT, including one 11,500 DWT tanker under construction.

Wuchang Shipbuilding, known for its specialty in small- to medium-sized chemical tankers, currently holds 37 orders totaling 694,300 DWT—28 of them are chemical tankers—ranking third globally in this segment, following Wuhu Shipyard and CMHI Dingheng.
