Unmanned submersibles work in tandem to conduct research xinde marine news 2018-05-08 15:02

China's Haiyang-6 scientific research vessel, carrying an unmanned submersible, returned to Guangzhou, the provincial capital of south China's Guangdong Province, on Friday after completing a joint operation with a manned submersible in the South China Sea.

The unmanned submersible "Haima," or Sea Horse, is capable of operating at a depth of 4,500 meters and demonstrates China's firm grasp of deep sea exploration technology.

"[The joint research] established a platform where science and technology can be combined together. It provides a comprehensive range of technical support for scientists to collect samples and basic data for scientific research. The pulling power of science and technical support promotes the development of our deep-sea science and technology," said Chen Zongheng, the technical director for Haima at the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey.

During the expedition, Haima and the manned deep-sea submersible Shenhai Yongshi, or Deep Sea Warrior, conducted coordinated operations two times. The two submersibles worked together and provided video support and records of each other's working situations.

"The mode of operation, especially the joint operation of two submersibles is an initiative championed by China. This operation allows us to gather a wealth of working experience and lays the foundation for the joint operation of multiple submersibles in the future," said Chen.

According to the expert, the joint operation is not only a manifestation of the overall enhancement of China's capabilities in deep-sea exploration, but also a first step for large-scale joint operations in the future.
