U-Ming Marine Transport Corporation, a prominent Taiwanese shipping company, is on an ambitious fleet expansion journey. After recently placing orders for six 64,000 DWT new vessels in Chinese and Japanese shipyards, U-Ming has once again turned to Chinese shipyards for up to four additional Capesize bulk carriers.
U-Ming has already secured a contract with Hengli Heavy Industry in China for the construction of two Capesize bulk carriers, each with a deadweight of 181,000 tons, flagged in Singapore. The first two vessels are expected to be delivered in July and August of 2027. Industry sources suggest the price for each vessel is approximately $78 million, with the contract including two optional vessels, potentially bringing the total value of the order to $312 million (around RMB 2.26 billion).
This follows a series of strategic moves by U-Ming, including the signing of a contract in October with NEW DAYANG Shipyard for the construction of four 64,100 DWT bulk carriers. Additionally, in the past month, U-Ming also ordered two more 64,000 DWT bulk carriers from Oshima Shipbuilding in Japan.
Currently, U-Ming has seven 64,000 DWT bulk carriers under construction, five of which are being built by NEW DAYANG Shipyard, with delivery scheduled between March 2025 and March 2028.
With a goal to expand its fleet to 100 vessels, U-Ming currently operates 79 ships, including bulk carriers, VLOCs, tankers, cement carriers, and crew transfer vessels, with a total deadweight of over 9.5 million tons.
