China and South Korea's 8 major shipping companies compete for orders of 12 23,000TEU ships xinde marine news Sarah Yu 2020-02-25 16:01

Obviously, the trend of large-scale ships in the shipping market will not change due to China's novel coronavirus pneumonia. Two other shipping giants will formally place orders for 23,000TEU super large container ships, a total of 12 units worth $2.4 billion that have attracted competition from eight yards in China and South Korea.

It is reported that Hapag-Lloyd and Ocean Networks (ONE) have confirmed plans to order 6 23,000TEU dual fuel container ships respectively, and the new ships will be delivered in the middle of 2022. The yards competing for the contracts include China Hudong Zhonghua, Jiangnan shipbuilding, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding,Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering,as well as the three major South Korean shipbuilding companies Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding.

Chinese shipping companies are quoting about US $ 170 million to 185 million for 23,000TEU super large container ships, while South Korean shipping companies are quoting about 180 million to 200 million US dollars.Based on this price, Hapag-Lloyd and ONE's six ultra-large container ships can be valued at up to $ 1.2 billion, and the total value of the two orders is close to $ 2.4 billion.

Although Chinese shipping companies have lower quotations, China's shipping companies are worried that they may lose to South Korea under the influence of the new coronavirus epidemic.Due to the impact of the epidemic, it is difficult for ship enterprise personnel to visit customers abroad, and overseas customers cannot enter China.

If the order of Hapag-Lloyd and ONE can be finalized, it will be the first time for the two companies to order 23000 TEU super large container ships.
