Beijing and Moscow are mulling over cooperation to jointly develop coal projects in Russia, the Russian deputy prime minister said on November 17.
The Russian government is planning to sign long-term contracts with China to co-develop coal deposits, the Zashulanskoe coal deposit in the Trans-Baikal region in particular, and to further expand exports to China, Alexander Novak said after a virtual meeting of the Russia-China intergovernmental commission for energy cooperation.
China has been putting efforts to increase coal production to keep electricity supplies guaranteed during winter peak months, after coal shortage caused several energy crises and pushed the prices of the fossil fuel to record highs ahead of the winter peak period.
China has been importing more coal from Russia since the informal bans on Australian coal imports, as a result, it is now the largest export destination for Russian coal.
Russia is also a major supplier of crude oil and natural gas to China. The two countries also worked on a joint oil and gas exploration project on Russia's onshore and continental shelves. Both China and Russia have agreed the stable operation of cross-border power transmission, according to a government announcement.
Inter RAO, a Russian energy exporter, said earlier that it had almost doubled its power supply to China since November, reaching 550 GWh per month at Beijing's request. Russia supplied 4.1 billion cubic meters of natural gas to China in 2020, and 7.1 billion cubic meters during January-September.
