The shipping industry is going through a period of uncertainty driven by high commodity prices, slow economic growth, political risks and changing bilateral trade flows brought about by the Russian- Ukrainian war. In addition, the fallout from COVID-19 has not disappeared with many shipping sectors still operating inefficiently as supply chains fail to recalibrate. These factors, plus others, are having a massive impact on maritime transportation, which accounts for more than 80% of the world's total trade.
At the same time, the requirements for ships to reduce their emissions are also increasing with the new EEXI and CII regulations imposing stricter restrictions on existing vessels from next year with many owners now looking towards low or zero emission fuel alternatives, for their next newbuilding order.
China, however, remains the dominant global player, in terms of both dry bulk and crude imports, as well as the largest exporter of containerised goods. China is also now the world's largest shipbuilder whilst also holding an increasingly important role in ship finance.
