World’s First! Methanol Dual-Fuel Intelligent VLCC Kicks Off Construction xinde marine news Chen Yang 2024-11-04 09:40

On November 1st, Dalian Shipbuilding, in partnership with China Shipbuilding Trading, officially began construction on the world’s first methanol dual-fuel intelligent Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) for China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES). This groundbreaking project marks not only a major collaboration between CMES and Dalian Shipbuilding but also a critical step toward global green shipping and a low-carbon future.

CMES announced in August 2023 that its board approved the order of this VLCC at a net price of $107.5 million, with delivery anticipated no later than April 2026. Shortly after, in September 2023, all parties signed the formal shipbuilding agreement.

The VLCC, stretching 333 meters with a 60-meter beam and a capacity of approximately 2.1 million barrels of crude oil, showcases Dalian Shipbuilding’s proprietary 8th-generation VLCC design. It leverages cutting-edge environmental technologies, including a methanol dual-fuel engine, EGR (exhaust gas recirculation), SCR (selective catalytic reduction) systems, and an open-loop scrubber, fully complying with the latest emissions standards and optimizing energy efficiency.

Through sustained partnership with Dalian Shipbuilding, CMES continues to make headway in creating industry-first vessels across the VLCC, tanker, bulk carrier, and LNG transportation sectors. This innovative methanol dual-fuel VLCC not only strengthens collaboration but also underscores shared commitment to China’s “Dual Carbon” strategy and exemplifies China’s leadership in green shipping technology.

Beyond VLCCs, in March 2023, CMES announced the order of two 9,300-CEU methanol dual-fuel car carriers, alongside four 9,000-CEU options. With the first two expected to be delivered between late 2025 and early 2026, CMES is making significant strides in building a cleaner, smarter fleet. On August 28, 2024, construction began on our second 9,300-CEU vessel, further showcasing CMES's commitment to sustainability in the shipping industry.
