China starts building offshore wind farm with world's largest turbines Sxcoal 2023-02-09 09:53

China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) has begun construction of the second phase of its offshore wind farm Zhangpu Liuao, the world's first offshore wind farm to be powered by 16 MW wind turbines.

Located off the southeast of the Liu'ao Peninsula in Zhangpu county, in the southern part of Fujian Province, the Phase 2 is designed to have a capacity of 400 MW, which is able to produce 1.6 TWh of electricity each year. This can be otherwise produced by about 500,000 tonnes of standard coal with carbon dioxide emissions of about 1.36 million tonnes.

The total investment in the project is estimated at 6 billion yuan ($885 million). To develop the 16 MW wind turbine model, CTG collaborated with Goldwind Technology and produced the first components for the unit at the end of last year.

The company claimed that the wind turbine has the largest single capacity, the largest rotor diameter, and the lightest weight per megawatt in the world.

The construction of Zhangpu Liuao is part of CTG's commitment to promote the development and use of clean energy. The wind farm is expected to be completely operational by 2024.

CTG is also working on other renewable energy projects, such as the construction of a 16 MW solar-wind plant in Kubuqi desert, northern China. The project, to include 8 MW of solar power capacity and 4 MW of wind power, is expected to be the world's largest power generation center of its kind in desert areas.

China is clearly making great strides in the development of offshore wind energy and is leading the way in the global green energy revolution. This is an important step in the fight against climate change and in the transition to renewable energy sources.

China's installed electricity generation capacity reached 2,560 GW by the end of 2022, up 7.8% from a year earlier, the National Energy Administration data showed. Wind capacity totaled 370 GW, up 11.1% year on year, while solar jumped 28.1% to 390 GW.
