Weihai in east China's Shandong Province works to boost maritime equipment industry CCTV 2022-10-14 09:53

Weihai City in east China's Shandong Province has in recent years focused their priority of work on the development of high-end ocean engineering equipment by supporting the growth of such leading enterprises like Jinling Shipyard.

Weihai Economic and Technological Development Zone in the city has a 19-kilometers coastline for industrial manufacturing, with some of its local businesses have land resources standing idle. At the same time, a state-owned shipbuilder in Weihai was in need of a proper site to manufacture and deliver its orders.

To coordinate the development of both local businesses and the shipbuilder, the development zone authorities have worked as liaison between the two, coordinating land resources and manufacturing capacities, in a way to promote the development of maritime equipment industry.

"If we don’t have a proper site to produce the auxiliary components for ships in time, the delivery time of the orders will be affected,” said Zheng Hehui, general manager of China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai) Co., Ltd.

The authorities of the Weihai Economic and Technological Development Zone stepped up efforts to meet the needs of the shipbuilder, contacting the Haida Logistics, a company with a two-hectare vacant site.

"The project of Haida Logistics covers an area of 30 mu (two hectares), with a floor area of nearly 20,000 square meters. After its completion, the plant remained idle as it had found no suitable buisness,” said Wang Dengpan, deputy head of the economic development bureau of the Weihai Economic and Technological Development Zone.

With the coordination of the local authorities, the shipbuilder and Haida made an initial deal to cooperate for five to 10 years.

The local authorities have also made efforts in attracting investment.

"We have attracted about 417 million U.S. dollars of investment so far. The project of Shandong Electrician Electric Co., Ltd and submarine cable production project have been signed, and the project of unmanned boat production base will start construction soon," said Wang Jinpo, deputy director of the development zone's merchants bureau.
