China's cargo, container throughput sees steady growth in January-March CCTV 2022-04-13 11:16

The cargo and container throughput at Chinese ports registered stable growth in the first quarter of the year, despite the resurgence of COVID-19 in parts of the country, said an official with the Ministry of Transport on Monday.

Major ports in China all recorded steady growth in the cargo throughput and container handling volume in the first three months of the year, according to Liu Peng, deputy director of the Maritime Transportation Department of the Ministry of Transport.

The cargo throughput at the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in east China's Zhejiang Province came in at 303 million tons in the first quarter, up 3.4 percent year on year. In the first three months, container handling at the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port expanded by 2.9 percent from a year ago to 7.91 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), data released by the Ministry of Transport show.

"Due to the pandemic situation abroad and the resurgence of COVID-19 at home, the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has strengthened its prevention and control measures to guard against imported cases. Besides, the port has also accelerated the construction of its hardware facilities to effectively improve the cargo handling capacity of the terminals," said He Jie, director of the Container Center of the Business Department of the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port.

In the first quarter, the Tangshan Port in north China's Hebei Province handled about 178.87 million tons of cargo, with the container throughput reaching a high 620,313 TEUs.

Meanwhile, the container throughput at the Tianjin Port in north China hit a new high in the first three months, topping 4.627 million TEUs, up 3.5 percent year on year, the Tianjin Port Group said on Sunday.

"The cargo and container throughput at China's ports registered stable growth in the first quarter of the year. We have taken effective measures to coordinate and restore normal operation of the Yingkou Port. We've also made efforts to guarantee cargo distribution and transportation at the Shanghai Port. At present, the Shanghai Port is operating normally. Both the loading and unloading of cargo at the port are in normal operation in a smooth and orderly way. The waiting time and berthing time of international container ships have both showed a trend of steady declines," said Liu Peng.
