China's new manned submersible completes maiden voyage xinde marine news 2018-04-09 15:00

China's new manned submersible Shenhai Yongshi, or deep-sea warrior, which can reach a depth of 4,500 meters undersea, returned to a port in Sanya City, south China's Hainan Province on Friday, after it completed its maiden voyage.

The voyage, the first one since the submersible completed its deep sea testing last year, lasted for 17 days.

During the voyage, the submersible dived every day for an average eight hours for each dive. It also set a record of consecutive diving into sea for four times within 52 hours.

"The record of consecutive diving four times within 52 hours included a release and recovery of submersible under very rough sea and three release and recovery operations at night. Before that, the operation at night had only been completed by Russia. As far as consecutive diving is concerned, we're close to the world advanced level," said Tanggu Lashan, lead of the maiden voyage with Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Ninety-five percent of Shenhai Yongshi submersible components were domestically made. The high-level utilization of domestically developed systems on the deep-sea warrior marks a major breakthrough for China in deep-sea exploration technology and the manufacture of related apparatus. Experts said the domestically developed equipment performed well during this voyage.

"The domestically developed equipment stood the test in the voyage. No problem that happened during the voyage affected the diving. All the equipment was tested according to the overall operating mode. So we're very satisfied with the performance of the submersible," said Yang Shenshen, deputy chief designer of manned submersible Shenhai Yongshi.

The training of crew members also carried out simultaneously during the voyage. Two trainees completed more than 15 times of diving and became the pilots of the submersible.
