Steen Brodsgaard Lund will join organisation, replacing outgoing CEO Martin Crawford-Brunt

RightShip, the world’s largest maritime risk management and environmental assessment organisation, has today announced the appointment of its new CEO, Steen Brodsgaard Lund.

Steen joins the organisation to succeed Martin Crawford-Brunt, who will be departing RightShip on 18th   December 2020. Throughout his three years in charge, Martin has advanced several key initiatives for the benefit of a safer and more sustainable maritime industry.

These include leading RightShip, together with the world’s largest bulk ship operators, in drafting the new Dry Bulk Management Standard (DBMS) which supports the continuous improvement in bulk carrier safety. Martin has also spearheaded the development of RightShip’s revised technology platform and a new rating system to deliver higher levels of safety in the shipping industry.

Martin Crawford Brunt, Outgoing CEO, RightShip, said “It has been a real privilege to work alongside such passionate and dedicated colleagues, and in collaboration with the industry, to increase our positive impact on safety, environmental and social outcomes.”

Rashpal Bhatti, Chairman of RightShip, added: “The RightShip Board would like to thank Martin for his dedication to RightShip through a backdrop of difficult global economic conditions, IMO 2020 and the pandemic. He has steered the company well through this challenging time. We wish him and his family all the very best.”

Incoming CEO Steen Brodsgaard Lund will be based in Singapore and expand RightShip’s global reach from the maritime hub that counts many of its customers.

Speaking on Steen Lund’s appointment, Rashpal Bhatti added: “We are excited to welcome Steen Brodsgaard Lund to the RightShip family. His ship owning, ship management, classification society and nav/com experience – which has been built over more than 30 years in the industry – coupled with his strategic relationships with owners, regulators and technology companies, match perfectly with RightShip’s ambitions to build partnerships with our customers as we grow an increasingly digital market presence.”

The RightShip shareholding (BHP, Cargill, and Rio Tinto) remain committed to elevating shipping safety standards, and RightShip as the industry leader will continue to drive progress in ensuring that all vessels globally are safer than they were yesterday.

Steen Brodsgaard Lund, Incoming CEO, RightShip, said: “Joining RightShip feels like coming home. The time I have spent in ship owning, ship management, classification and nav/com services has had the safety of vessels and crew as a common theme. In recent years, emphasis has increasingly grown on measuring and mitigating emissions and deploying digital solutions to support and drive the core business.

“RightShip’s mission remains to improve the safety and environmental sustainability of the maritime industry, which matches the experience I have built during my career. I look forward to working together with all RightShip colleagues in Melbourne, London, Houston and Singapore as we build close partnerships with our customers and set the strategic direction to deliver true relevance and integrated value to the entire maritime ecosystem.”

Steen has over 30 years’ experience in the maritime industry. He spent 21 years with A.P Moller Maersk, where he was responsible for the Maersk Line network in the Americas, Oceania, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. He was also the Executive Vice President and Head of Asia Pacific for Germanischer Lloyd, and following the creation of DNV GL in 2013, he returned to Singapore to lead the regional operation of the newly merged company until 2017. Steen subsequently headed Radio Holland’s activities in Asia and since early 2019 served as CCO and CDO at Executive Ship Management.   He is an ardent advocate for the digitalisation of the maritime industry, exemplified by his position as a Council Member of the Singapore Shipping Association where he was Chairman of the Digital Transformation Committee, and as Adjunct Fellow at the MPA Academy where he lectures on technology in the maritime industry.
