East China's Fujian maritime department beefs up control measures amid coronavirus outbreak xinde marine news 2020-02-18 10:22

The maritime department in east China's Fujian Province has beefed up remote monitoring and on-the-spot patrols to ensure the safety of key projects under construction amid the novel coronavirus epidemic.

The department sent vessels to escort a channel expansion project every day in Xiamen Port since it restarted the construction work on Jan. 28. Law enforcement officers ask whether crew members have had their body temperatures taken or there are signs of fever or cough.

"Remote monitoring and on-the-spot patrols allow us to urge enterprises to effectively implement the safety measures. They play a special role in a special period of time," said Li Wenfeng, a law enforcement officer with the Xiamen Lujiang maritime office.

Affected by the epidemic, all maritime passenger liners in Xiamen Port have been suspended except the ones facilitating local residents' trip on the Gulangyu Island.

To avoid cross-infection among crew members, the maritime authorities required the ferry company to cut the number of its on-duty crew members on board six ships from 18 to 6.

During the epidemic prevention and control period, relevant certificates signed or issued by the maritime administration can postpone their expiring date automatically.
