On January 3, Qingdao MSA investigated and punished a foreign ship that failed to use marine fuel in accordance with the requirements of the air pollution emission control zone. This is the first case in which Qingdao ’s international sailing vessels have used fuel exceeding the standard since the implementation of the 2020 Global Sulphur Cap on January 1, 2020.

 

On the same day, PSC officers of Qianwan Marine Department of Qingdao MSA carried out port state supervision and inspection of a large Korean bulk carrier with a length of more than 300 meters. While carrying out ship safety inspections, PSC officers focused on the ship's implementation of Global Sulphur Cap. The test result was 0.677% m / m, exceeding 30% of the specified limit of 0.5% m / m, and it was determined that the ship used non-compliant fuel. PSC officers will immediately deal with illegal ships in accordance with the "People's Republic of China Air Pollution Control Law" and relevant provisions of international conventions. The case is currently being processed.

 

Since January 1, 2020, international navigation vessels must not use fuel oil with sulfur content exceeding 0.5% m / m in the waters under our jurisdiction. With the full implementation of this "most restrictive sulfur cap", global shipping will usher in the era of low sulfur fuel.
