China's shipbuilding enterprises surpass South Korea after 9 months

After nine months, Chinese shipbuilding enterprises have finally surpassed South Korea in the number of orders received in a single month and returned to the top position in the world.

According to the latest data released by Clarkson, the global order volume of new ships in April this year totaled 98 ships of 3.05 million CGT, of which the order volume of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises reached 53 ships of 1.64 million CGT, accounting for 54%.

However, South Korea's shipbuilding enterprises are relatively backward in receiving orders, with 34 ships of 1.19 million CGT, accounting for 39%. The third-ranked Finnish shipping company received two orders of 80,000 CGT.

This is the first time since July last year that South Korea's shipbuilding enterprises have lagged behind China in the number of orders received in a single month, losing the champion position for nine consecutive months.

In the first four months of this year, global new ship orders more than doubled year-on-year, reaching 15.43 million CGT, more than tripled compared with the same period when the shipbuilding industry experienced the most severe depression in history in 2016.

In the first four months, China's shipbuilding enterprises received 248 orders, about 7.05 million CGT, ranking first in the world. Followed by South Korean shipping companies, with 171 orders received, about 6.82 million CGT, ranking second. The Japanese shipbuilding enterprises ranked third, with a total order volume of 35 ships, about 1.03 million CGT.

By the end of April, global handheld orders had reached 76.95 million CGT, an increase of 950000 CGT (1%) compared with the end of March. Among them, China's shipbuilding enterprises continued to rank first in the world with a total of 28.98 million CGT, accounting for 38%; Followed by South Korean shipping companies, with 24.72 million CGT of handheld orders, accounting for 32%; The third is the Japanese shipbuilding enterprises, with a hand-held order volume of 8.37 million CGT, accounting for 11%.
