LISW25 Exclusive Interview – Denis Petropoulos: Can Shipping Save Globalisation?

With globalisation under pressure from protectionism, geopolitical fragmentation, and rising costs, the shipping industry faces a defining question: Can shipping save globalisation?

This is the theme that will headline the flagship conference at London International Shipping Week 2025 (15–19 September), where global leaders gather to debate shipping's role in sustaining world trade. Denis Petropoulos, Chair of the LISW25 Board of Advisors and former Chairman of the Baltic Exchange, told Xinde Marine News in an exclusive interview that the industry must confront the paradoxes shaping its future.

"We're looking at decarbonisation versus affordability, globalisation versus protectionism, and innovation versus regulation. These are the contradictions that shipping must navigate to remain resilient and relevant." Petropoulos said.

A Week of Global Engagement

The Headline Conference, chaired by Citi's Michael Parker and opened by IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, will put the globalisation debate at center stage. The first panel, moderated by UK Transport Minister Nusrat Ghani, will challenge leaders including former BIMCO President Nikolaus Schües to address whether shipping can continue to connect the world in an age of fragmentation.

Alongside the IMO sessions, more than 300 events will take place across London during LISW25 – from high-level policy debates to technical seminars, networking receptions, and maritime technology showcases. Delegations from Asia, the Americas, the Middle East, and Europe will underline London's position as a global hub.

More Than a Forum

Petropoulos stressed that LISW is not only about ideas but also about action.

"It's both a forum for ideas and a business accelerator," he said. "The connections made here in London will quickly grow into global collaborations. Companies will gain the visibility, access, and momentum they need to lead change.”

Shipping's Responsibility

Beyond geopolitics and business, Petropoulos pointed out that discussions will also focus on responsibility in shipping – from bulk transport security to crew welfare and training, and from decarbonisation to future fuels.

"Many continue to operate well-maintained fleets with skilled seafarers, putting safety and the environment first. That's the standard we want the industry to be measured by." he said.

He contrasted responsible practices with those operators who ignore their wider obligations. "We will openly shame those unscrupulous ship operators with no concern for the environment, crew welfare, and geopolitical responsibilities," Petropoulos told Xinde Marine News.

For Petropoulos, LISW25 is a moment for the global industry to show leadership, set standards, and demonstrate that shipping can remain the backbone of globalisation.
