CNOOC ships first batch of LNG tank containers by sea xinde marine news 2018-11-06 16:09

A ship carrying 130 containers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanks set off sailing from China's southern island province of Hainan on Sunday, marking the country's first container shipment of LNG tanks from the south to the north for clean heating in winter.

Most of China's LNG bases are in the south. When winter comes, the natural gas supply in the north would be insufficient but transition by pipelines and tankers in existence are not able to fully release the surplus LNG capacity in the south.

The new shipping method by sea could help solve the problem, according to Jin Shuping, vice president of the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) Limited.

"Shipping LNG tank containers via vessels on a massive scale could effectively discharge the surplus capacity in the south. In the maiden voyage we had 130 tank containers shipped tentatively, and one tanker is enough to supply gas for a village with 500 households for five days at the peak of heating period in winter," she said.

The shipment of LNG tank containers also offers door-to-door delivery with the linkage of railway, highway and waterway transportation.

"It can be said that this new type of shipment has created a sea-borne mobile artery for LNG transportation along the Chinese coast in addition to traditional land-borne transportation via pipes and container vehicles. It is a new measure to guarantee the people in the north to spend winter in warmth," said Jin.

As a next step, the CNOOC plans to ship more LNG tank containers via inland rivers such as the Yangtze and the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal.
