China's Ministry of Transport said on Friday that in early August, China and Panama signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Cooperation between the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China and the Maritime Safety Administration of the Republic of Panama.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding, China and Panama will work together to build a maritime cooperation framework to deepen bilateral cooperation in the prevention of pollution by oil from ships and toxic and hazardous substances, and preparedness for emergency management and ship ballast water management in the field of marine environmental protection, and will jointly promote and facilitate maritime transport between the two sides.

Meanwhile, China and Panama will share maritime safety management information and knowledge of maritime accident investigations.

In addition, the two sides will also promote mutual recognition of ship nationality certificates and ship documents, according to the memorandum.

China and Panama will continue to comprehensively expand in-depth cooperation in the areas of maritime transport, maritime affairs, ports and other transportation infrastructure, and jointly promote the China-Panama interconnectivity and cooperation within the framework of the "Belt and Road" initiative to jointly build the "21st-Century Maritime Silk Road", according to the China-Panama Maritime Agreement signed on November 17, 2017.

The Belt and Road Initiative, proposed by China in 2013, refers to the initiative on the construction of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. It is aimed at building a trade and infrastructure network connecting Asia with Europe and Africa along ancient trade routes.
