Reporting from the North Bund International Shipping Forum in Shanghai: Seaspan confirmed that STARLINK will be deployed across its entire fleet, positioning satellite broadband as core infrastructure for shipboard systems, crew connectivity, and the next wave of data-driven operations. The company framed Starlink as part of its broader “digital & intelligent upgrades,” alongside automated EU-ETS compliance reporting, with the aim of creating the network foundation for future AI applications and deeper analytics at sea.
This move sits within Seaspan’s long-running SAVER retrofit program, under which the owner has already invested roughly $230m to complete 552+ efficiency upgrades across 86 vessels, with a further $200m and 85 upgrades planned (including methanol dual-fuel conversions). The strategy is to raise the efficiency ceiling of in-service ships and extend economic life while strengthening compliance and operational resilience.
For a sector navigating volatile policy and market conditions, reliable bandwidth is no longer a “nice-to-have”—it’s the data pipe that underpins safer operations, faster decisions, and better seafarer welfare.
