1.2 Million Tonnes CO₂ Cut Ahead: COSCO SHIPPING Lines Unveils World's Largest Methanol Container Fleet xinde marine news Chen Yang 2025-07-15 16:37

COSCO SHIPPING’s Commitment to Building the World’s Leading Low-Carbon Fleet

At the today‘s green methanol bunkering ceremony in Dalian, Qin Jiangping, Vice General Manager of COSCO SHIPPING Container Lines , shared significant updates on the company’s ambitious green fleet development and its ongoing efforts in decarbonizing the shipping industry.

Key takeaways from Qin's speech included:

Fleet Energy-Saving Modifications: COSCO SHIPPING has implemented large-scale energy-saving modifications to over 30 container ships, including upgrades such as exhaust gas scrubbers and propeller optimizations. These efforts have led to a 15%+ annual reduction in CO₂ emissions per vessel.

Methanol Dual-Fuel Fleet Expansion: The COSCO SHIPPING Yangpu, China’s first retrofitted methanol dual-fuel container ship, has already undergone multiple green methanol bunkerings. Looking ahead, the company is building 12 more 24,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel vessels, which are set to become the largest low-carbon container ships globally, expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 1.2 million tons per year once operational by 2026.

Electric and Hydrogen Fuel Innovations: COSCO SHIPPING is also actively pursuing alternative energy sources, with 700 TEU all-electric container ships soon to be deployed on the Yangtze River, and two hydrogen-powered test vessels currently in the design phase, further advancing the exploration of zero-carbon shipping solutions.

Biofuel Initiatives: Since 2022, COSCO SHIPPING has pioneered biofuel applications, with over 12,000 tons of biofuels bunkered, resulting in a 2,400-ton reduction in CO₂ emissions. The company has also launched its “Hi ECO” green shipping product, utilizing GSBN blockchain technology to trace fuel carbon footprints and offer measurable low-carbon shipping services.

Qin emphasized that the green fuel transition cannot be achieved by shipping companies alone. Instead, it requires collaboration across the industry to establish a closed-loop ecosystem involving production, transportation, bunkering, and application. This vision was evident in COSCO SHIPPING’s partnership with China Marine Bunker (CHIMBUSCO) to create a comprehensive green methanol supply chain in Northeast Asia.

In conclusion, COSCO SHIPPING is steadfast in its commitment to building a sustainable, low-carbon fleet and advancing green maritime solutions, contributing significantly to the global net-zero emissions goal.
