Just Weeks After Ordering Four, Ningbo Ocean Shipping Unveils Another Newbuild Plan! xinde marine news Chen Yang 2025-06-20 17:25

Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co., Ltd. has announced a bold new move—investing up to RMB 2 billion (approx. USD 275 million) to construct four 4,300 TEU container vessels to further expand and optimize its fleet.

The newbuild project, approved by the Board on June 19, is still subject to shareholder approval and will go through an open tender process to select the shipyard. The company will use a mix of internal and self-raised funds for the investment.

Doubling Down on Fleet Expansion
This follows Ningbo Ocean’s April order of four 2,700 TEU vessels, meaning its total newbuild investment within the past 12 months has exceeded 50% of its audited net assets—a strong signal of strategic growth.

Why 4,300 TEU?
As mid-sized containerships rise in demand due to regionalization and Red Sea disruptions, Ningbo Ocean’s move mirrors a global shift. The company aims to reinforce its position in high-frequency feeder and regional trunkline services.

As per Alphaliner, the carrier currently operates 87 vessels with a total capacity of ~86,000 TEU, including 42 owned ships. Its network now spans from coastal China to Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.

The 4,300 TEU segment is heating up:
Arkas Line: 6 ships at Huangpu Wenchong
TS Lines: 2 at Huangpu Wenchong
Euroseas: 2 at Yangzijiang (for Maersk)
Navigare Capital: 4 at Sanfu (for CMA CGM)

With the backing of Zhejiang Seaport Group and growing synergy with JiaHua Shipping (which also ordered 4 x 4,800 TEU vessels), Ningbo Ocean is well-positioned for regional collaboration and future growth.
