The protracted collapse of large UK-listed law firm Ince Group sent shivers through much of Hong Kong’s shipping community this morning (13 April).

Staff at Ince Hong Kong were inundated by concerned clients with enquiries as to the future of the firm, which has been among the leading maritime law firms in the territory for more than 40 years. However, despite reports hinting at the contrary the law firm is unaffected by the turmoil in London.

Ince Hong Kong began to gain its autonomy following the merger between Ince in London and the US law group Gordon Dadds in 2018. Ince Hong Kong is an entirely separate firm and is registered with the Hong Kong Law Society as such.

Ince Hong Kong partner Rosita Lau told Hong Kong Maritime Hub, “It is very much business as usual in our office. I should like to express my gratitude to all those clients and friends who called in with their messages of concern and support.”

The announcement in London yesterday (12 April) did coincide with it becoming known that Ince partner Wai Yuh Loh would be giving up his partnership in Hong Kong and closing the Ince Beijing office. However, enquiries led to the understanding that Mr Wai’s intention to leave had been agreed with the company some months ago. Mr Wai remains joint managing director of independent Singapore-based Incisive Law.

The Ince Group is set to enter administration after a lengthy auditing process meant it still has not published its financial results for the year ended 31 March 2022.
