Chinese Port Pilots Welcome 5G 'ERA' xinde marine news 2018-05-18 00:19

Telecommunications equipment firm Huawei and telecommunications company China Unicom have unveiled a 5G product that offers smart ports a totally-connected wireless network.

The 5G Edge-Cloud Smart Port Solution is, Huawei said, already being used at many big ports in Chinese pilot cities.

The product, which has a cloud-based distributed core network, deploys the distributed gateway at the edge cloud near a port — unlike traditional wireless communication networks, where core network gateways are deployed at the provincial central node and access to both the cloud computing centre and local communications needs a core network gateway.

According to Huawei, the tool is able to integrate third-party applications connected to video optimisation, firewalls and Internet of Things platforms, and the smart port cloud computing centre’s move to the edge cloud greatly boosts data security and user experience.

The 5G Edge-Cloud Smart Port Solution has already provided network support to multiple demonstration projects, the telecommunications equipment business said.

Presenting the product’s service scenario, China Unicom Institute of Networking Technology deputy director Zhu Changbo said: “With thousands of cameras monitoring every corner of the port in real time, employees were able to inspect their operations through their hand-held mobile terminals.

“Before the deployment of the Edge-Cloud solution, network latency wildly fluctuated and video playback often stalled, severely affecting work efficiency.

“However, after utilising the 5G Edge-Cloud solution, video data is now distributed locally, so delays are significantly reduced and video playback is much smoother.”

Huawei predicted that “smart ports will definitely be a promising vertical market” with “the 5G era” coming up.
