Delays at ports in China Standard Club 2020-10-09 11:30

The club's correspondent in China of substantial delays to vessels carrying imported coal to China, in particular coal loaded in Australia.

The main delays are occuring at the ports of Jingtang, Caofeidian, Huanghua and Bayuquan. The delays in waiting for a discharge berth range from 2 or 3 weeks up to 3 months. The delays appear to be impacting vessels carrying coal from Australia in particular.

It is understood that the delays are due to a strict interpretation by the customs authorities of import regulations, resulting in prolonged customs clearance formalities, along with quota controls. We are also advised that the delays may be due to reduced domestic demand for imported coal.

Members who intend to carry coal to China are advised to contact their local ship agents well in advance of arrival. We would also urge members to carefully consider the potential impact of such delays on any planned or pending crew changes in the area.
