韩国海洋与渔业部通过的《改善港口地区空气质量的特别法案》已于2020年1月1日生效，宣布了在韩国主要港口设立“ SOX排放控制区”。根据该法规，自2020年9月1日起，进入排放控制区内的船舶，将分两个阶段逐步实施使用硫含量不大于0.1％m/m的船用燃油。
