China's new-type deep ocean research vessel Dong Fang Hong 3 officially joined in the Dong Fang Hong research fleet of the Ocean University of China on Friday.

The 103-meter-long and 18-meter-wide research ship with a tonnage of 5,800 tonnes has a maximum speed of 15 knots.

Launched in January last year and delivered to the Ocean University in June this year, the research ship has accomplished three voyages with 26 major scientific tasks in South China Sea.

Built by Shanghai-based Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co., Ltd, the Dong Fang Hong 3 is the first Chinese research vessel and the world' fourth to have obtained a Silent-R certificate, the highest standard for underwater noise control issued by Norwegian international certification body, DNV GL.

"[The research] data will be quite accurate, and the research results coming from this ship are recognized," said Yan Ju, vice president of the Ocean University of China.

After joining the research fleet, Dong Fang Hong 3 will set off on missions at Northwest Pacific Ocean, Mariana Trench as well as South China Sea. By that time, it will then join Dong Fang Hong 2 to form a research team to conduct localized and synchronized observation of ocean space.

Dong Fang Hong 3 is an important project of the Ministry of Education. The 2,500-tonne Dong Fang Hong and 3,500-tonne Dong Fang Hong 2, built in the 1960s and 1990s, respectively, have made a great contribution to ocean research in China.
